Dear LSS Grade 5 Parent(s)/Caregiver(s):

As part of The Public Schools of Northborough and Southborough Health Curriculum, the fifth-grade students participate in the Growing & Changing program which is designed to educate students about adolescent development. The lessons in this unit will cover the normal physical, social, and emotional changes the body undergoes during puberty. The program will include accurate and factual information, presented in objective and reassuring terms. Specific topics to be covered include feeling positive about growing up, the anatomy of the male and female reproductive systems, puberty, menstruation, and personal hygiene. A question and answer period will be included.

According to our school policy, parents/guardians may exempt their child from any portion of curriculum that primarily involves human sexual education or human sexuality issues. If you choose to opt your child out of the adolescent development unit, your child will be provided an alternate activity. 

This program is designed to be an introduction to adolescent development and bodily changes. It is our hope that this program will lead to meaningful and insightful discussions between you and your child. You can find further information here:
